Water Transportation Week - Submarines
To end our two week study on Water Transportation, the children made Twinkie submarines. This week ends our six week study on transportation. We hope your children have enjoyed all the crafts, activities, and field trips planned as we studied land, air, and water transportation. #WaterTransportation

Water Transportation Week
The past two weeks we have been learning about Water Transportation in the Orchard classroom. We set up a water obstacle course for the kids. The children climbed aboard the recycled boat we created and went fishing to see how many fish they could catch. It was not as easy as it looked! Thankfully, the water was not deep so we encouraged them to step outside the boat if need be to catch their fish :) Then we raced our juice box boats, each child blowing on theirs to see whose

Recycled Transportation Vehicles
Thank you for all of the recyclable items your children brought in. We were able to use them to creatively make The Orchard Express train, a train conductor that the children named "Noggin," a sailboat, an airplane, and a rocket. Our creations will be on display for you to see up close on Back to School Night. I have attached some pictures of our creations for you to enjoy! #AirTransporation #LandTransportation

Kindergarten Cultural Program: Venezuela
We want to thank Julia’s mom, Veronica, for coming to class to share information about Venezuela and the Johnston family heritage. Julia was born in the USA; however, both parents were born in Venezuela. Julia made flags showing her ties to both the USA and Venezuela. Mrs. Johnston told the students stories about growing up in Venezuela and highlighted things that students would see if they went to visit. For example: they would see colorful birds, fish, Angel Falls, tropical

Kindergarten Cultural Program: Japan
The Kindergarten class finished their study of Asia with a presentation that featured Japan. Here are a few highlights. The children learned that the flag represents the “land of the rising sun” and the landform - archipelago. They had the opportunity to surround the islands of the archipelago with water and learned that the bullet train is used to connect the four major islands. A few children knew the name of the capital - Tokyo and compared it to New York. I showed picture

Field Trip to the Ridgewood Post Office
Today we took a field trip to the Ridgewood Post Office. Ms. Jaime showed the children how mail is sorted and how packages are scanned. The children were able to practice scanning packages using the scanner. Then Mr. Tom, the mailman, showed the children the inside of his mail truck. It was a beautiful day for a walking trip! Many thanks to all our parent volunteers, Mrs. Hanrahan, Mrs. Andrade, Mr. Larson, Mrs. O'Donnell, and Mrs. Van Wageningen. We really appreciate all of

Kindergarten Cultural Program Europe: Germany, Italy and Portugal

UPS Visits MLC
We had a visit from UPS! Mr. Sebastian Ammamoo, the UPS industrial engineer, Mr. Scott DeStefano, the UPS business manager, and Mr. Tim Anderson, our UPS truck driver, all came in to school to talk to the children about what happens behind the scenes at UPS. Mr. Sebastian gave a great demonstration on how UPS delivers the packages and likened his job to that of Santa Claus, able to deliver packages all around the world. He split the children into various groups, each represen

Air Transportation Week
To kick off Air Transportation, we set up an air transportation obstacle course for the kids to enjoy. They raced their airplanes through cotton ball clouds and onto the runway, as Ms. Denise played the role of air traffic controller. They flew paper airplanes, dropped parachute people onto landing pads, and launched their own homemade rockets into the air. The children's favorite activity seemed to be the stomp rockets. They really loved stomping on the launch pads and watch

Recycling Department Visits MLC
We had a visit with Ms. Johanna and Mr. Ed from the Village of Ridgewood Recycling Department. They were kind enough to come into school and talk to the children about garbage and recycling. The children discussed what garbage is and they learned where the garbage goes once it leaves the garbage truck. Ms. Johanna showed them pictures of landfills and talked to the children about what items can be recycled so that we can help our Earth. Then Mr. Ed took the children on a tour
